CRA Disability Tax Credit DVD available

April 16, 2025

It’s important to note that if you don’t already have the DTC when someone dies, you can still apply for it after date of death if they would have qualified, as long as you can find a doctor willing to complete the form.

Just because someone did not live for 12 months does not mean they would not have qualified if they had lived.

If the doctor isn’t sure about their status, it might be helpful to review the video CRA has created with the doctor. The video explains DTC eligibility and there are 3 video examples that are really helpful in explaining ‘inordinate amount of time’.

The videos are worth watching just for a chuckle about the little guy’s knees wobble when he tries to put on his shoes in the dressing example...and the feeding example reminds me of my grandfather and how he would get a whirlwind going to get the soup to his mouth.

Find the video's from CRA on my home page right at the top left
www.taxdetective.ca

The walking example where the little guy clutches his chest is used because it illustrates the answer to the question by the Senate back in 2002 when they were yelling at the Minister of Finance about breathing not being an essential activity of daily living.

The Senate’s 30 page report demanding the Min of Fin do something about fairness for Canadians regarding their treatment about disability was answered when the Min of Fin created the Technical Advisory Committee in 2005 that started all these changes to the DTC and medical expenses and how the CRA administers everything.

If your DTC condition is mental functions, please read and pass along Dr. Karen Cohen’s article to the doctor/psychologist/psychiatrist on how to assess mental functions posted on the Canadian Psychological Assoc website:

http://www.cpa.ca/cpasite/userfiles/Documents/advocacy/tax%20credit.pdf

Dr. Cohen’s work on defining mental functions for the DTC has been stellar.

The rest of the video examples for the other impairments that qualify for the DTC will probably be finished by May or June. I’ll post the revised link when it’s updated.

CRA benefits administration created this video after extensive discussion about doctors understanding and reticence to complete the T2201.

It’s a work in progress and no, it’s not on their website yet as it’s not a finished product, but we have been given dispensation to distribute it on our websites.

Set up a link to my website on your own website to share the information with everyone you know.
