TaxDetective Club: Meets 2nd Friday at 11 am
November 19, 2025
Talk / Listen / Learn how to pay less tax.
Join the "TaxDetective" Club.
Where else can you learn about tax? Tax,
everyone loves to hate it. Tax,it's a bit like math in
high school, there is this invisible badge of honor
because you do not know math or tax. There is no tax
taught in high school. They do teach some courses in
college and university, but that's only for the commerce
students. You could go to the CRA website and start
reading, but where on earth would you start when the
language of tax is like a foreign language?
What would you learn about in this club?
With the current economic downturn, what you learn may
be well worth your subscription. Here's an example. If
you have a broker that cares, they may have called you
to tell you trade your losses. If you did not really
understand why and what you had to lose out on, you may
not have done anything yet. There is still time, but
it's running out.
This is why: If you paid
tax three years ago on capital gains from any source, if
you sold to generate losses before the end of the year,
you could carry back that loss once you used up any
gains in the current year first.
You could
get a refund for tax you paid three years ago, or two
years ago, or last year.
The oldest year
(three years ago) falls off the table if you don't do
this before the end of the year. I would definitely do
it before December 15, because I'm sure I read somewhere
that there's an early cut off date for year end trading
but I can't remember what it is this morning. I'd have
to research that. If someone knows, maybe they can drop
me a note.
That's just one example of the
things you will learn as a member of the TaxDetective
Club.

My niece spent two
weeks reading TaxLinks this summer. For her summer job,
she edited the links this summer to make sure they all
work (there's over 460 links). I had to laugh when she
called me to ask if I knew that this is a whole tax
course that every Canadian should take. She's studying
second year History at Guelph. You can purchase TaxLinks
without the club membership for $49.99 at
www.taxdetective.ca/shop.html
When will the
club meet? Series of 5 meetings (1 hour each
meeting) 2nd Friday each month at 11 AM from
January to May 2009
Can't make that day/time,
I am flexible, we can change the day/time. Request
another day/time, email me at
This club is
relevant for any taxpayer who files personal tax returns
and pays tax. It's for the individual taxpayers with
employment income, or self-employed income, with assets
and liabilities that generate interest they wish they
could deduct. It's for students who want to make sure
they know enough so when they do start to pay tax, they
arrange their affairs so they stay out of trouble and
pay less tax.
Cash or margin accounts,RRSPs
or RRIFs or RDSPs and RESPs, a rental suite. Everyone
wants to find the deductions they are missing out on.
We will review where to find all of those
deductions so that when it's time to make a claim, you
can find them again.
We will look at
something most people forget to
consider.
What would that be? Tax credits.
Appropriately documented and by arranging your affairs
to pay for the right expenses, those tax credit claims
or transfers from other family members you support can
reduce your taxes by thousands of dollars.
