I'm a Certified General
Accountant. I'm married to this
amazing guy, 28 years now.. and I
have volunteered for the past five
years for local Emergency Social
Services when there's a large scale
emergency. I also volunteer at CGA
BC student recruitment events at
Universities and Colleges in the
Vancouver area.
I've worked from a home office for
over 26 years. About 2004, I started
writing, and Toastmasters helped me
overcome my fear of speaking in
public, enough so that I took some
time out to engage with Canada
Revenue Agency about their
communication skills and their
website's lack of information about
disability and medical
expenses. You'll find I have a page
of useful links for families to
access the information they've made
available but don't advertise is
there. There's even videos they made
about how to complete an application
for the disability tax credit for
doctors to view. Gumby is alive and
well at CRA.
I enjoy speaking about Canadian
taxation for all kinds of audiences.
My favorite audiences are families
who support someone with a
disability or infirmity because I
can make such a
substantial difference in their
finances in such a short time, and
bookkeepers and accountants because
they need to know how to make the
same difference!
As a Certified QuickBooks ProAdvisor,
I consult on best practices for
keeping records to facilitate
decision making and accelerate
business growth by implementing
internal controls and proper
accounting systems. I've created an
amazing series on how to Master
QuickBooks software, it's 20 hours,
and saves you at least 200 hours if
you were to attempt to learn the
program on your own.
"TaxDetective®” is my brand. A client
nicknamed me that and it stuck. I
research and write about tax for a
variety of publications. You'll find
the useful links under my Links tab,
and for the heavy duty tax
links, there's TaxLinks Pro Portal.
It's a subscription, renewable each
October 1 for $30. My web and
computer guy, Malcolm, suggested I
sell access to the links, so I do
and people appreciate the work
that's gone into the links by
re-subscribing every year.
On the home page there's a link to my
Blog, and you can follow me on
Twitter.
If you're a business education
teacher, you'll appreciate my
free Student WorkBook on
learning TurboTax® online complete
with a 10 minute instructional video
on how to introduce it in your
computer lab (respecting student's
privacy so it's anonymous) To find
this, hover over My Projects (the
purple tab on the left side of any
page) and select Student WorkBook.
In my "Store" you’ll find some
products you'll find very useful: an
e-Book on organizing your affairs
plus 24 companion fillable Word
forms if you're the one organizing
someone else or your own financial
paperwork;
Oh yes, Mastering
QuickBooks® Software is
a serious series of QuickBooks
training videos; 20 hours of
training that took me three months
to write, delivered over 10 days in
two hour segments. Heavy on content.
Bookkeepers who have purchased the
series tell me they have replayed
the series 3-4 times.
New in 2012, more QuickBooks
training, this time a five part
video series on working papers,
plus more short training videos on
specific topics, for example, how to
use Units of Measure to mix drinks
for Fred's Bar is lots of fun and
useful too.
And..this fall, by request, I've
started an online TaxDetective Boot
Camp for anyone who wants to learn
more about personal tax. This would
be useful for families, especially
the tax preparer for your family.
Anyone can sign up and attend the
monthly online meeting, either by
phone or with a computer and a
headset or a phone.
I'm always adding products to my
store. I present workshops for
bookkeepers via the Institute of
Professional Bookkeepers of Canada
(see their website to register @
www.ipbc.ca to register)
If you want to hear me speak,
check the web page called "Mark your
Calendar" for upcoming events, and
after the event, if it's been
recorded, purchase the recording in
the website store.
