Women: Check your name with CPP

February 18, 2010

I checked up on my CPP balances the other day. Much to my surprise, I discovered I had to sign in under my maiden name.

My account was never changed to my married name. Who thinks about retirement when you are getting married? I changed my name with the tax office, but CPP, never crossed my mind.

Now I'm off to visit the office in Richmond one of these day. The clerk who answered the phone said they never used to bother changing your name before, but now that everything is automated, it's necessary to bring in your marriage licence and other ID to prove you are who you are.

Probably a good idea to do that before you try to collect CPP starting at 60 under the new CPP rules!

Don't know what's changed? It's a pretty major overhaul as of December 2009:
