Lunar New Year commences January 26, 2009
January 20, 2009
Lunar New Year, based on the Lunisolar calendar commences January 26, 2009.
Next year Lunar New Year starts on February 14, 2010. The 2010 Olympics run from February 12 to 27.
New Year celebrations of many sinospheric (Asian) cultures are based on the lunisolar Chinese calendar. Chinese, Korean, Tibetan, Vietnamese and Mongolian people celebrate New Years beginning on the first day of the first Lunar month. This year, that day falls on January 26th.
Chinese New Year is celebrated in Richmond and around the world for 15 days, ending on the full moon, February 9th with the Lantern Festival and a lantern parade. Other Asian people celebrate Lunar New Year for anywhere from 3 to 15 days.
It's interesting that Japan opted out of Lunar New Year and adopted the Gregorian calendar in 1873, so their first day of the new year is January 1. Year 2009 is referred to as either the Year of the Ox, the Year of Ji Chou or Year 4706 in the Chinese Calendar.
Bringing in the new year and expelling the old year involves shooting off firecrackers on New Year's Eve. At midnight, open all your doors and windows to allow the old year out and welcome the New Year in.
