Who publishes a plethora of free, clear, concise guides and interpretations of federal and goods and services tax for taxpayers? It might surprise you to find that the Canada Revenue Agency (CanRev to us tax wonks) publishes all kinds of guides and information both on its Website and in print. The puzzling thing is that all these publications seem to be a well guarded secret.
Not only are Canadians left in the dark about tax, they have no idea how the information game is played. Our media sensationalize the budget, religiously showing the Minister’s traditional new shoes and highlighting the key points of the budget speech. Much is made of intrepid business journalists sequestered in the pre-budget “lockup.” And there’s a lot of fuss and bother about who gets the budget news out first . . .
