The phone rings, double ring

Out of the fax machine, reassessment notices pile up in the box. Once again, a review of 10 years of personal tax returns results in refunds for missed RRSP claims. What’s the deal here?

Why would this scenario niggle at me all summer? Refunds, a disappointing 20%, due to low taxable income, not the 40% advertised. Was a 20% refund just not enough incentive to ensure clients claimed all of their contributions or was it something else?

Could it be that no one noticed if people ...
